H5N1 Bird Flu

What Producers should do now.

While the immediate risk to sheep and cattle remains negligible, the detection is a timely reminder to sharpen biosecurity habits. The following actions are recommended by DAFF and DPIRD.

Monitor livestock, wild birds and wildlife for unusual signs of illness or unexpected deaths. Then report anything concerning to your local vet or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Do NOT touch or move multiple dead or sick wild birds. Record what you observe and report it.

If you keep backyard poultry, prevent wild birds from accessing feed, water and housing. Monitor for sudden deaths or disease signs.

Avoid co-mingling livestock and poultry where possible and limit contact between livestock and poultry litter. Also Keep them away from manure used as fertiliser or equipment shared with poultry farms.

Keep dogs and cats away from other wildlife and out of areas where wild birds congregate. Clean boots, clothing, and vehicles when moving between properties or national parks.

Use PPE when handling sick animals, birds or when working near animal secretions.
